Top 10 Photographs - 2018
Inspired by Martin Bailey I decided to pick out 10 of my favourite photographs of 2018. These were all taken on Fuji Cameras either Fuji X-T2 or the new Fuji X-T3
Photographs from Santorini feature quite frequently in my top 10 thanks to the photogenic properties of this beautiful Island. I was lucky enough to vacation there for a week in October
Room with a view
I didn’t have to go far for this capture of dusk over the Caldera. This was taken from the balcony of the Hotel room with a cold beer to hand. I like the image for tones and tranquility and the cruise ship anchored outside of the harbour is a typical sight.
Three Bells Sunset
Santorini is famous for its beautiful sunsets and I was able to capture a few during my trip. I like this shot of the three church bells silhouetted by the deep red as the sun is moments from disappearing behind the distant mountains.
There are a large number of stray cats in an around the steps and the alleyways of Santorini. They appear to be in good health and well fed (presumably from the hands of tourists who who dine in the various restaurants in the area!)
I took this shot with the excellent Fuji 55-200mm lens. This is an excellent and comparatively light-weight telephoto lens which makes it ideal for travel.
Through the window
I like the way that the stained glass window of the church is lit up by the light from the setting sun. This is a typical (read cliched) shot of Santorini. This captures the essence of the place and has been chosen by my wife to be printed and hung in the house.
I used the photographer's ephemeris to help plan this composition for dawn. The sky was less dramatic than I hoped but with the aperture of the Fuji 10-24mm lens set to f22 the highlight of the sun against the church has rendered as a star-burst which adds interest.
I took this shot on the beach front in Brighton, UK. I like the winter light on the remains of the South Pier. There are few people about on this cold afternoon and this gives a sense of desolation which I like in this case. Taken with a Fuji X-T3 and Fuji 16-55mm lens and edited in Capture One Pro 12
I like the moment that the swimmer and swan meet. I was taking pictures on Lake Wolfgang in Austria at dawn when the swimmer and swan arrived into my composition. I had to quickly change my camera settings to increase shutter speed and to focus on the new subjects. The sky was clear and fairly un-interesting leading to me cropping tightly.
Amberley Castle, Sussex
I like the soft light on the castle and the raindrops on the pond in the foreground in this shot
I got up at dawn to catch the fishing boats leaving the harbour in Padstow, Cornwall. I like the tranquility of the scene. The sky is not very dramatic but that helps in some ways
Lost at sea
Another photograph taken in Padstow, Cornwall. There was an interesting sea fog on the dawn of my last day in Cornwall. Time pressure meant that I needed to pack up early just before the sun broke through the mist in fact.
